I often do use low gear in high range when downshifting, it's often just low enough to turn a corner without having to shift back to low range. Fact is there is probably more than one way to skin those cats. It's been ages since I drove a 5-4 and I was a kid (perhaps 14 ) I don't remember the correct patterns. Try and you will understand.ġ0 speed has them spaced so that when you reuse 1st on the high side it is 6th gear. If you try to shift from 4 (low side ) to L on high side you will find yourself in a lower gear than 4. If you reuse L on a 9 speed in high range you will land in the middle of 3-4 on the low side. If you look at the actual gear ratios for a 9 speed and a 10 speed the spacing tells the story. This cab is almost as tall as the top of the grain bed. I had no idea GM made a truck that looked different than all of our c-65's. All the dash lights work, interior light, no rust, just alot of oil puddles under the detroit. I can't believe how well this truck looks for 74 model and 430,000 miles showing on hendrickson and 22 foot alum. I guess we are just suckers! This one actually runs. I don't know how we come across all of these detroit trucks. But if you shift a 13 speed using a 15 speed pattern things could get really ugly. Just another note, if you have a 15 speed and are shifting it like a 13 speed you would have a huge jump from 5th to 6th gear. Heck Eddie just put a big set of bull hauler stacks on all of them then the gears wont matter just grind away gggggggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr bang! lol Posted 23:03 (#687626 - in reply to #687537) Subject: Why are you worried about gears? Just remember, the first 5 gears are just like a 5 speed tranny, the next 4 all have two gears per hole. So to get 13 gears you have 5 the first time through the pattern and then 4, with each having 2 gears the second time. Each hole has two gears this time through. 8th gear you move the thumb button back and go to the 3rd gear position and so on. (You do not use the 1st gear position the second time through the pattern )to go to 7th gear you don not move the shift lever, you move the button on the thumb side of the shift knob forward. 6th gear is when you pull up the plunger (leave it up for all of the next 8 gears ) and put the shifter in the same position as 2nd gear. The pattern for a 13 a speed is: Clear over to you and back, is 1st gear, you continue through the first 5 gears. I haven't tried hole 4 and 5 in low, and it did seem like a slight jump from low 3 to mid #1 hole. I could even have a 15 speed and not know it. How many differences are there! The engine was an 8v-71 so the tranny may have been changed also. The tranny handle says low, ind, and o.d. The door panel says low, direct and overdrive. If that was the case, I shift it from mid range 4 to high range 9. But, the tranny handle for example in the #1 hole states 1/4/9. The way I shift it is low range 123, then mid range starting at the #1 hole, then flip to high range, then mid range #2 hole, then high range, etc. It has a 13 speed but the door panel transmission gear pattern indicator doesn't match up with the tranmsmission handle which I don't think matches the transmission itself. Why can't we use that hole? Also, we just bought a 74 Chev. The 9 speed doesn't use the #1 gear hole in the high range where the 10 speed does. We have one of each in 99 volvo n-14 daycab set ups. What makes a 9 speed different from a 10 speed. Posted 22:22 (#687537) Subject: Semi transmission gear patterns? Semi transmission gear patterns? Jump to page : 1 Now viewing page 1
